Bookmarking: How and Why You Should Do It

What is Bookmarking? Bookmarking is a method for Internet Marketers to notate, store, save, organize, share, or flag an article or web page on the Internet. Think of it as your own filing system, but better! If only I could use it for all my paperwork at home… 

Besides the obvious organizational benefits, Why Should You Bookmark? When you bookmark any web page, you can choose to make it visible for everyone. And, for the most part, I encourage you to make your bookmarks public. By making your bookmarks public, you expose them to everyone that is looking; including Google. That could mean better search engine rankings and more visibility. It’s what we’re all after….more exposure.

Please be aware that Google has rules. You can’t just bookmark your own content and nothing else and expect to get good search engine rankings. You’ll have to properly play the game. You’ll need to bookmark more for everyone else, and less of your own personal content. I think a ratio of about 5:1 should work as a guide; maybe more or less. The important thing is that it happens naturally, or appears to be so. Search engines don’t seem to encourage or promote selfish marketers.

The 2 types of bookmarking sites are: social bookmarking sites like Digg and StumbleUpon and other sites that act like a public list of your bookmarks, like Delicious and BackFlip. Both types of sites have value. I do have my favorites! Some sites are so much easier to use than others.  Bookmarking sites will offer an option to make your bookmarks public, or not. Some sites allow you to put in tags and others don’t. Especially when you’re bookmarking your own content, you’ll want to be able to enter keywords, or tags, which help your bookmarks become easier to find. And, some are much more social and fun than others. Try them all out and find what fits you and your “bookmarking” personality!

Bookmarking Tips: There’s the matter of “No Follow” and “Do Follow” links. Using bookmarking sites that are known as “Do Follow” means our links are more visible; have more influence over search engines ratings, and can be followed to their source. It doesn’t really mean that you shouldn’t use No Follow sites, because your bookmarks can still be noticed, just maybe not as well as they could be at a Do Follow bookmarking site. It’s still a matter of opinion and those opinions are changing daily.

Some say that a link is a link. Some say that Google cares but Yahoo doesn’t. There’s value in all links; but some have more “search engine” value than others. Whether or not your links are Do Follow or not, the search engines will still find your web pages within your social bookmarking sites and reference them.

The important thing is that you get into the habit of bookmarking and do it regularly, in a natural manner; bookmarking your own content along the way. Basically, we are creating a search engine powered by people. Bookmarking your Internet Network Marketing content is just as important as clicking the “Publish” button in terms of getting exposure for your content. Make it part of your daily routine.
